Ever want a job making others miserable? Then, tax preparation might be for you. Tax preparation for individuals is fairly easy, and it is not hard to get a job with a company like H&R Block. You will have to go to tax preparation courses, many times your potential employer will offer them. While it may be a firm that hires you, in most cases you will be on your own.

Tax preparation companies vary but many of them require you to find and maintain your own clients. Some preparation companies work on a commission or percentage basis, meaning you really work for yourself. You are labeled an individual contractor that has to file his or her own business taxes. Many companies require a non-compete and will not allow you to even do your own taxes, let alone family members, so keep this in mind.

All companies use some sort of income tax preparation software which makes it much easier on everyone. The tax preparation field can be lucrative, but not all year round. Tax preparers are incredibly busy during April, and not so much the rest of the year. The few ways around this would be to try to get clients who own their own business and file quarterly. Most tax preparers do it part time, or have some other job during the off season. View our guide Tax Preparation Courses for even more in-depth information.

Nobody likes paying taxes. Well, I shouldn’t state that… as I am sure there is some sick individual out there that loves to pay their taxes. Some people, just have problems. For the rest of us in the world, it is important that we pay them, and pay them on time. Property tax payment schedules vary, unlike income tax returns. It is important to find out when taxes are due in your town, at your local town office. Luckily the town knows you do not enjoy paying your taxes, and will make sure you know when and how much you should pay by mail.

Many towns have their schedules posted online for you to see. Just like income taxes if you do not pay on time there will be penalties. If you state that you will be late and ask for an extension, this may void added penalties. Contact your local town office for details on the matter, it is their job to aid you. Your property tax due date does matter!

Pay your property taxes? Then you should receive a property tax statement. When you make a payment towards what you owe for your property taxes, you will receive a receipt. This receipt will tell you how much you paid, and your property tax statement will tell you how much you still currently owe.

If you have misplaced, or never got, a property tax statement you should request one. Your local town office should be able to handle the request the day you ask for it. Requesting a property tax statement is as simple as walking into your town office with your id, and requesting a statement. Depending on your town, you may or may not be charged a small fee. Typically though, they like you having this information, and will not scare you away with a fee. Without a statement, it makes it hard to pay your property tax bills and file your state income taxes.

Property taxes are based on your property tax assessment, and are typically due quarterly. Towns will often let you pay your property tax in payments, and will not charge you extra fees unless you are late on a payment. This is why it is of the utmost importance to have a current statement at all times, and to get a receipt after every payment. You need your statement for tax purposes, and will likely have to send in a copy to the IRS each year if you do not want to pay taxes twice. You already paid them to the town, so it gets subtracted from your taxable income, for federal returns.

Thinking of buying a new home? The fun part of the whole process is going to look at houses, the not so fun part… trying to assess the value of a home. Sure the Realtor who listed the property already figured the “sell price,” but what is it really worth? Some districts charge incredibly high property taxes, while others charge relatively little. You also need to assess what you are getting for the taxes paid. How is the police force? How is the local school system? Does the town keep great care of the roads? These questions need to be looked at to determine how much “waste” is in the prospective home’s town.

Sometimes neighboring towns can differ by as much as 3% points; what are you getting in return? Towns which have heavy commercial districts, have a lake, or has ocean access typically have lower property tax rates. Why is this? The value of the properties on a lake, for instance, are valued much higher than a property in the middle of nowhere, meaning the town can charge an incredibly lower fee. Depending on waste, fire departments cost the same for two towns that have 1,000 residents over the same amount of acreage. A town that has hire valued homes will have to charge a lower amount to its citizens to get the same service as a town that has much lowered valued properties.

Generally the last years property tax bill will be listed in the property prospectus that the Realtor will give you when looking at a property. It is never a bad idea to “double check” this figure by going to the town hall yourself. You can actually find out what anybody pays on their property taxes just buy asking for a record. The noisy neighbors will always know how much your homes value is, just by doing a little reverse math, and figuring out the value based on how much you paid on property taxes. Yes, some people are that tricky. This is something Realtors have been doing for ages, when there are few recently sold properties comparable to a specific property in the area.

When you make a payment towards what you owe for your property taxes, you will receive a receipt. This receipt will tell you how much you paid, and your property tax statement will tell you how much you still currently owe. Some towns send out yearly receipts for you to use for tax purposes, as you can “deduct” these property taxes while filing your income tax returns. When filing your income taxes you will need your property tax receipt(s) handy. It is important to save all of these documents when they are received, and put them aside in a special place. I personally keep a folder each tax year, and throw everything I receive in there.

If you made the mistake of throwing out your property tax receipt, or just misplaced it… you are able to get a new one. The easiest, and fastest way, would be to head down to your local town office and they will print you out one. Whether or not you have to fill out a form and have them “process” it for you, or if they can do it right away does not matter. Town offices will get you documents you request in under a week, in almost all cases… unless otherwise noted. Some town offices will require a fee to print this out, and if you live in a bigger town where people do not know you, you must bring an I.D.

Property taxes typically go to very localized activity, like local school districts and roads. A percentage of your property taxes go to your state, the rest goes to your town. It is very easy to figure out how much tax your town adds own to your property tax, and all you have to do is ask your local town clerk. Property taxes are a percentage of your property’s “assessed value.” Typically your town will send somebody around to your property every few years to see if anything has changed. They do not do this every year as they just change your value based on current market factors in most years. Typically they will leave you alone, unless you have gotten a building permit or changed anything during the tax year.

A career as a tax preparer can be a rewarding one, at least financially. As with any job, hard work will be required, and your dues will have to be paid. Unless you have a nice degree in accounting, employers will require you to complete a tax preparation course. The courses’ fees range, but are generally affordable. More often than not, your potential employer will offer the course to you, as a requirement to be hired.

H&R Block, for example, requires two classes, a basic and more advanced course. After this you will be able to select seminars based on which field of work you would like to spend most of your time. You can tax an Investment income seminar and focus on retirees that just have investment income, or you can spend time and focus on the self employed. To take the courses you will be required to pay $99- $299, depending on where you live. As you will be operating, largely on your own time, investments need to be made.

It only makes sense that the company that is going to hire you, train you correctly. You will be required to pass a test to become a preparer. These courses help you be able to pass the test, and also prepare you in your career. As with any job, the most important trait is experience, and you will find the longer you continue the more money, there is to be made. You will get clients that will come back every year.

The biggest thing to look for is whether or not your potential employer has a non-compete agreement. Meaning, if you sign on with a company, you will not be able to work for anybody else for so many years. This means you cannot even complete your own tax forms yourself, let alone your friends. If you are looking to eventually start your own business, try not to get yourself restricted. It makes sense why places like H&R Block require this agreement, otherwise you could just run off with all your clients, that they brought to you.

Who likes taxes? Perhaps the government, but other that that they are pretty much hated across the board. Why are taxes needed? If taxes just went to things like roads, or schools nobody would mind paying them. The problem lies with the amount of greed involved in politics. Politicians seem more greedy than the CEOs that they try to paint as greedy. See… the truth is, politicians are not supposed to be greedy, and CEOs are. Regardless, taxes are not fun. Taxes are not fun to prepare. Taxes are just plain and simple painful. This site will help you look at the ins and outs of tax laws, and while we do not pretend to be lawyers, we can help you as much as we can. Because tax law changes so constantly, it makes it hard to keep up with everything. This site will at least point you in the right direction, when we cannot answer your questions completely. On this front page, you will find links to many topics you could be looking for. There is also a search function, that you should not be scared to use.

When looking to buy a house, one of the first things you should look at after the price is the property tax assessment. Always as for the last property tax statement or property tax receipt, and call the town office to see if the property tax percentage is planning to be raised this year, and by how much… as it always is. What is an average property tax? It depends on the state in question. Some states have little property tax because they have a sales and/or an income tax, while others just have a property tax. It goes without saying, states that just use property taxes as their main source of income, have much higher tax rates.

Property tax lookups are pretty easy, as you can just go to your local town office and request rates, and information on individual properties. Generally, the real estate agent will have already used a property tax service to let you know how much was paid during the previous year on property taxes. People sometimes have property tax disputes because they feel their current rate is unfair, or they feel their house is over assessed. An over assessed property can lead to a decreased market value, as potential buyers will be scared away because of the high taxes. There are few ways to lower property taxes, other than your house decreasing in value. Occasionally towns need less resources and will reduce property tax rates, specifically if other areas of revenue are doing well. It is never a bad idea to render the services of a property tax lawyer or property tax consultant if you feel your property taxes are too high. This is easiest way to get property tax help.

We do not have to be rocket scientists to know that Americans are having trouble financially. Paying taxes are an especially hard thing to do when you have been laid off, duh. Americans are facing the government April 15th when many have no way to pay their taxes that they owe for events that occurred more than a year ago. Does it rain in April because of taxes, or did the IRS schedule the tax due date because we were all sad due to the rain. Maybe it is just some sick practical joke? There is tax relief help available for those who need it, especially due to for extenuating circumstances. The easiest form of help is the tax return extension, something that you probably do not need a lawyer to file.

If taxes are not paid in time you could be susceptible to one or more of the following, bank account garnishment, payroll garnishment, credit card garnishment, wage garnishment, loan garnishment, student loan garnishment, and even social security garnishment. Garnishment laws are in place giving the right to the government to siphon off your money. The hope here is that they will be paid in full, plus some extra, and not completely ruin your life. Every action possible should be taken to stop wage garnishment. There are many garnishment rules, and garnishment exemptions that need to be looked into before taking any action. Click here for our guide: How to Stop Garnishment.

Tax returns are due April 15th, in most cases. Americans now have the option to file federal taxes online for free. Income tax preparation services, and income tax preparation software can help with IRS tax preparation. Preparing tax returns are not easy due to the IRS’ complicated tax code. Tax preparation fees can range from $20 to thousands of dollars, all depending on the complexity of the tax return. If you just have income from one or two sources it should be easy to prepare your tax return. Some preparers will even be able to estimate your tax return, or if you are even due one.

Tax preparation is not a bad career, if you can stand numbers and mad people. Tax preparation courses need to be taken before anyone can become a tax preparer. Generally, most forms just use simple addition and subtraction, so if you can balance your checkbook you may have a career. There is business and personal tax preparation, the latter is an easier field to get into.

Tax relief help is available, and this website will help guide you to it. Click on one of the following for help! Tax credit relief, pension tax relief, business tax relief, federal tax relief, hurricane tax relief, stimulus tax relief, school tax relief. IRS settlements are possible with the help of a tax relief attorney. Taxes are a burden, but should never be crippling. The best defense is to pay taxes properly, which includes paying them on time. File federal tax returns on time! Look over our pages for help and guides to all your tax questions. Knowledge is key to being able to understand the complicated tax system. Even if you hire an attorney or a preparer, you need to know what he/she is doing. Checking their work, when possible, is never a bad thing!
