Become a Tax Preparer

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Ever want a job making others miserable? Then, tax preparation might be for you. Tax preparation for individuals is fairly easy, and it is not hard to get a job with a company like H&R Block. You will have to go to tax preparation courses, many times your potential employer will offer them. While it may be a firm that hires you, in most cases you will be on your own.

Tax preparation companies vary but many of them require you to find and maintain your own clients. Some preparation companies work on a commission or percentage basis, meaning you really work for yourself. You are labeled an individual contractor that has to file his or her own business taxes. Many companies require a non-compete and will not allow you to even do your own taxes, let alone family members, so keep this in mind.

All companies use some sort of income tax preparation software which makes it much easier on everyone. The tax preparation field can be lucrative, but not all year round. Tax preparers are incredibly busy during April, and not so much the rest of the year. The few ways around this would be to try to get clients who own their own business and file quarterly. Most tax preparers do it part time, or have some other job during the off season. View our guide Tax Preparation Courses for even more in-depth information.

Tax Preparation Courses

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

A career as a tax preparer can be a rewarding one, at least financially. As with any job, hard work will be required, and your dues will have to be paid. Unless you have a nice degree in accounting, employers will require you to complete a tax preparation course. The courses’ fees range, but are generally affordable. More often than not, your potential employer will offer the course to you, as a requirement to be hired.

H&R Block, for example, requires two classes, a basic and more advanced course. After this you will be able to select seminars based on which field of work you would like to spend most of your time. You can tax an Investment income seminar and focus on retirees that just have investment income, or you can spend time and focus on the self employed. To take the courses you will be required to pay $99- $299, depending on where you live. As you will be operating, largely on your own time, investments need to be made.

It only makes sense that the company that is going to hire you, train you correctly. You will be required to pass a test to become a preparer. These courses help you be able to pass the test, and also prepare you in your career. As with any job, the most important trait is experience, and you will find the longer you continue the more money, there is to be made. You will get clients that will come back every year.

The biggest thing to look for is whether or not your potential employer has a non-compete agreement. Meaning, if you sign on with a company, you will not be able to work for anybody else for so many years. This means you cannot even complete your own tax forms yourself, let alone your friends. If you are looking to eventually start your own business, try not to get yourself restricted. It makes sense why places like H&R Block require this agreement, otherwise you could just run off with all your clients, that they brought to you.

Who likes taxes? Perhaps the government, but other that that they are pretty much hated across the board. Why are taxes needed? If taxes just went to things like roads, or schools nobody would mind paying them. The problem lies with the amount of greed involved in politics. Politicians seem more greedy than the CEOs that they try to paint as greedy. See… the truth is, politicians are not supposed to be greedy, and CEOs are. Regardless, taxes are not fun. Taxes are not fun to prepare. Taxes are just plain and simple painful. This site will help you look at the ins and outs of tax laws, and while we do not pretend to be lawyers, we can help you as much as we can. Because tax law changes so constantly, it makes it hard to keep up with everything. This site will at least point you in the right direction, when we cannot answer your questions completely. On this front page, you will find links to many topics you could be looking for. There is also a search function, that you should not be scared to use.

When looking to buy a house, one of the first things you should look at after the price is the property tax assessment. Always as for the last property tax statement or property tax receipt, and call the town office to see if the property tax percentage is planning to be raised this year, and by how much… as it always is. What is an average property tax? It depends on the state in question. Some states have little property tax because they have a sales and/or an income tax, while others just have a property tax. It goes without saying, states that just use property taxes as their main source of income, have much higher tax rates.

Property tax lookups are pretty easy, as you can just go to your local town office and request rates, and information on individual properties. Generally, the real estate agent will have already used a property tax service to let you know how much was paid during the previous year on property taxes. People sometimes have property tax disputes because they feel their current rate is unfair, or they feel their house is over assessed. An over assessed property can lead to a decreased market value, as potential buyers will be scared away because of the high taxes. There are few ways to lower property taxes, other than your house decreasing in value. Occasionally towns need less resources and will reduce property tax rates, specifically if other areas of revenue are doing well. It is never a bad idea to render the services of a property tax lawyer or property tax consultant if you feel your property taxes are too high. This is easiest way to get property tax help.
